RHOSE Representation of Homes Open Seminar (24): Mónika Mezei: Representation of Home in Holocaust survivors’ testimonies, Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa. Room C134.A: 19th of June 2023 between 14:30 and 16:30

Mónika Mezei’s presentation will explore the portrayal of home in Holocaust survivor testimony videos. Her paper delves into how the concept of home is represented in testimonies from the Video History Archive of the Shoah Foundation of the University of Southern California (USC SF). These testimonies encompass comprehensive life interviews, where survivors, rescuers, or witnesses share their stories and experiences before, during, and after the Holocaust. Childhood memories, centred around their homes, often emerge as a focal point, representing a place of security and tranquillity prior to the traumatic events. Within these testimonies, various themes related to the notion of “home,” including family, holidays, relationships, and religious life, are extensively discussed. During the presentation, excerpts from video testimonies will be screened to examine the portrayal of these themes.
